For the first time

I actually feel pregnant this week. Not ill with morning sickness, but pregnant. Could be that none of my regular shorts fit and most of my shirts come down to the very top of my maternity shorts, so my stomach peeks out frequently. It could also be that I can't cross my legs at the computer without feeling like I'm being squished.
I'll be 12 weeks on Sunday, so I guess it's time to start feeling it (especially with the 3rd kid) but it's just strange. I guess because we just found out two weeks ago, it seems like things are moving really fast. I have to get my paperwork for the hospital filled out and mailed in to them within the next week. They wanted it in by the end of the 3rd month and I'm there. It's not like they won't admit me without the paperwork - I turned Shelby's stuff in when I arrived!
I will be happy for the 1st trimester to be over. The fatigue and the morning sickness (which I get at night) should end and hopefully my sudden aversion to red meat. It's so sad that the thought of a cheeseburger turns my stomach. I love cow! Right now I favor pork of all kinds and chicken nuggets (especially the dinosaur shapped ones). We do regular chicken too, but that's not as appealing. Good thing that the grocery stores have pork on sale right now!
Even chocolate has lost it's appeal. (It's a sad, sad world I live in.) I guess that's why I haven't gained any more weight. Oh well, I see the light of the 2nd trimester and things will be all good.
Now I'm off to find something for lunch. I'm thinking chicken nuggets.

Birthday fun

Friday was Sydney's b-day and she had her party at Build-A-Bear. I'm not sure who was more excited Sydney or Shelby, but the birthday girl had a lot of fun. The group built their animals and dressed them and named them before heading off to the food court for cake and ice cream. Sydney got to open her presents and everyone had a grand time. Here's a picture from after the party, of the girls with their animals.

Once we got home, Syd got to open her gifts from mom/dad and other family members. She loved everything and wanted to get it all out and play with it right away. It was almost 10 before we got them in bed and then we sat on the couch for a while to relax.

So one of the things that we got her was a tent. They used to have a small castle tent, but the construction wasn't that good and the thing broke earlier this summer when I was trying to reassemble it. Now, I'm not talking about a camping tent - I'm talking about something to play in. Syd had been asking for a tent for a while, so we found one on line that looked good and was a decent price and ordered it. This was done before we knew about our little surprise. Well, here is a photo of the girls (dressed as princesses) in front of the new tent.

That would be a full size couch peaking out from behind the tent. It takes up most of the playroom when it is fully assembled. In fact, we got the entire family plus couch pillows and about 12 various dolls and stuffed animals in there the other night. The girls love it and are thrilled to play in it. It is made of a windjacket like material and slides on and off the frame easily, so mom and dad love it. Eventually, I think it will be moved downstairs to the study, but we'll leave it where it's at for now. What fun!

Wow

So here is a picture of our little surprise. This was my first look at the baby. Both of the girls looked like little dots in their first picture. Here you can see the head and sort of see the arms and leg buds. It's clearer in the picture, but the scan didn't pick up everything. As of today I'm 10 weeks - that means in 3 more weeks I'll be in my second trimester. Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase "skip a bit brother". We will find out if it's a boy or girl in late september.

My official due date is February 15, but we'll do a c-section sometime after the 5th. I've got district solo and ensemble contest on the 7th, so I'm going to push for the 9th. That would give me exactly 6 weeks until the end of spring break for maternity leave. I'd only have to use 24 of my days and would have a few left over for anything the rest of the year. Even better I'll only have 11 weeks of school and then I'll be off for the summer. That's much better than starting the school year with a 6 week year old, like I did with Sydney.

Now you might be wondering how I didn't know that I was pregnant - especially that far along. Well, I've never had a "normal" cycle and only had period 3 times last school year. So, I've been tired (taking a nap most days) and had some neausa, but no major throwing up like I did with the girls. I thought I had picked up a stomach bug in mid June, but just kept pushing myself to get over it. The idea never even occured to me that I might be pregnant. I should have known when I was craving milk that something was wrong - I usually only drink milk with my pancakes. :)

Happy Birthday to Me!

My birthday was really yesterday, but I had the wildest b-day imaginable. Are you sitting down? Here it goes....
About midnight I woke up with a terrible pain in my back. It was on the left side and felt like a charlie horse that you might get in the calf muscle. I woke Sean up and had him rub it, but that didn't do any good. In fact, the pain was getting worse and starting to wrap around to my front. I decided that was it, I was going to the ER. Anything that feels worse than labor pains means something is really wrong. So we loaded the kids up and headed to the hospital. I checked in and sat in the waiting room for a few minutes (now throwing up at this point) before someone came and got me. I left Sean with the girls while they took me to do some tests. The final decision was kidney stones. I've had them before - when I was pregnant with Sydney. I haven't been drinking as much water as I should lately, because I haven't been feeling well. (My stomach's been bothing me.) What do they do about kidney stones? Well, they gave me a bag of saline to get me hydrated and some anti-neausa medicine to stop the vomiting. Most of the time, they would give you some pain medicine right away, but they noticed something in my tests. In fact the nurse asked Sean and the girls to step outside and this was our conversation:
Nurse: "when we were checking for everything else, your pregnancy test came back positive."
Me: "oh ok - WHAT? Why don't you check that again."
Nurse: " I did it twice."
Me: "Seriously?"
Nurse: "you know how some people's pink line is really faint?"
Me: " yes - it could mean a false positive."
Nurse: "You'res was really bright."
Me (making eye contact with Sean outside) "I'm PREGNANT!" (laughing starts...)

So - no heavy pain meds for me. I'm 9 weeks along. I've been tired the past few weeks, but none of my other "usual" symptoms. I just have to drink lots of fluids and call my ob/gyn. We got home from the ER about 6am and Sean took a personal day. It looks like I'm due around mid-February, but I'll know an exact date tomorrow after my doctor's appointment.
This was a complete surprise for both of us. Although it does explain why I've gained a pound this summer when I've been trying to stick with my weight watchers diet. I just kept getting so hungry every day! The good news is that I've got days off to take 6 weeks for maternity leave without having my paycheck cut. Something that wouldn't be possible if I had changed districts this year. I knew there was a reason why I couldn't get a different job this year - just didn't expect this to be the reason. :) What a birthday!

Drum roll please......

I didn't get the job. I got a letter in the mail today. I guess my call to HR reminded someone to send out the "Dear John" letters. I had interviewed for an elementary music teacher position at one of the schools that feeds my current middle school. It would have been teaching general music, but less afterschool hours. Oh well. I prayed for the right job at the right time, so I've got my answer. Now I can focus on the upcoming year without any lingering doubts.

Today was Syd's day to join the "puddle jumpers" swim class. She wasn't focused at the beginning, but did really well as the class got going. In fact, one of the teachers said that since she wasn't yet three and couldn't move to level one (the next class) until she was 6, she might benefit from private swim lessons. That way she continued to advance. I'll talk to the teacher more about it at the end of next week. I wasn't going to sign the kids up for any more lessons this summer because I've got to back to school, but I guess we'll see. I can't imagine that I could have a child that swims really well, but I guess it's possible. (I still can't go underwater without holding my nose.) I do know that she loves the water, so anything's possible.

Since I didn't get the job, I know for certain that Shelby will be at the same elementary school next year. I've got her school supply list and am ready to watch the ads. Wonder what is on her list this year? Here it is:
36 No. 2 Dixon Ticonderoga Pencils
3 Washable crayola Thick Classic Markers – 8ct.
2 Colorations Sharp 5” scissor
2 pink bevel eraser
4 red pocket only folder
2 blue pocket only folder
1 yellow pocket only folder
1 green pocket & brad folder
2 120ct Kleenex tissue
24 small (6g) elmer’s glue stick
1 plastic school box large size
1 bounty paper towel roll
1 9x12 white sulphite construction paper
4 expo black fine tip dry erase marker
1 1’ red hardback vinyl binder
1 4oz elmer’s school glue
1 70 ct spiral comp book wide rule
3 8.5x11 – ½” red bl story tablet
1 12x18 solid 50 ct construction paper

Lucky for me Staples, Wal-Mart and Target will all have their school supplies on sale soon. Some of the run weekly specials, so I'll have my eyes open. Last year I went to 4 different stores looking for a Prang watercolor set - it came home in the end of year school supplies without being used. I know what your thinking. Yes, the school PTA does a supply pack that you can purchase, but that thing is pricey. Since I'm out and about each week anyway, I just watch the ads and keep the list with me. I figure I've got to buy things for my classroom anyway, so I can get everything when it's on sale. I usually pick up a few extras, so I've got them when they ask for more supplies mid year. :)

What Next?

It's only 3:00, but it's been quite a day. Swim lessons were in the outside pool because they are resurfacing the indoor pool. My towels weren't completely dry, so I laid them out on the lounge chairs to dry during lessons. The kids got to play on the slides for about 15 minutes after class and then we went to get the towels. Well, the sprinkler system was going off and the towels were soaking wet. Dripping as we were, we got in the car and went back to the house. (3 minute trip) Normally that wouldn't be a big deal - the seats will dry, but Shelby had dance class today at 12:30. I got home, sent the girls upstairs to get ready for a shower and hung the towels in a tree outside to dry. When I got upstairs the two sweet angels of mine were sitting on my side of the bed - STILL WEARING WET SWIMSUITS! Yes, my mattress was wet and no I wasn't happy about it. I managed to get them washed, shampooed and out of my room so i could get out of my wet suit. They even were given lunch before we left for dance. :)

We had to sit on plastic bags in the car on our way to dance. I still had a wet bottom in places but none of the other moms stayed at the studio, so it dried discreetly.
Just one of those days I guess. Now, if I could get my youngest child to stay in bed for her nap. I think I'm going to put the baby gate across her door. At least, she won't be able to get out and I can take a nap.

No News

Well, it's been 3 weeks since my interview and I've heard nothing. OK - well today I spoke with someone in HR and she said that they were not aware of the job being filled yet. So I'm going with no news is good news.
We had a great trip to Mississippi/New Mexico and are back at home now. Yesterday was the first day of swim lessons for both girls. Shelby is loving her class and doing well. She even held her breath and went underwater today. Sydney is in the Big Squirts class (which includes mom) but is doing very well. Yesterday she learned how to blow bubbles in the water. She is a good foot taller than everyone else in her class and on thursday we're going to try her in the next class up. My only concern is that it's for 3-5 year olds and she's not yet 3. She's a bit of a daredevil and might decided to hop in the water on her own. It was the swim instructor's suggestion, so we'll just see how it works. Either way, she's having a great time and loves the water.
As for me, I'm trying to get things started around the house. I've got a plan for cleaning and think with a little help I can get the entire house clean before school starts. I've also got some scrapbooking to do. I've started one page this summer, but haven't finished it. I have read several books and taken a nap most days. (Not today though.) I'm starting to feel like my old-self. I even think some of those dark circles are fading!
